New Delhi: The Centre is set to begin funding the first batch of large language model (LLM) developers selected under its ambitious IndiaAI Mission to build generative AI models tailored for Indian use cases, the Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on 7 April.
Vaishnaw confirmed that the evaluation of applications submitted for developing LLMs is nearing completion.
“Within the next few weeks, we should be able to award the first few LLM model teams, which will start receiving funding under the IndiaAI Mission,” Vaishnaw said.
The government has earmarked a timeline of around 10 months for the development of these India-specific AI models. While large language models are a key focus, the mission also includes support for smaller models depending on relevance and innovation.
Additionally, highlighting progress on the infrastructure front, Vaishnaw noted that the second tranche of the Graphics Processing Units (GPU) empanelment process is currently underway and drawing robust interest.
“After the first 14,000 GPUs that we acquired as part of the IndiaAI Mission, the response to the second tranche is equally encouraging. This means that our startup community and AI researchers will soon have access to significantly expanded compute capabilities,” he said.
He also pointed out the rapid pace at which Indian industries are adopting artificial intelligence. Many AI-based solutions developed by the industry have already been recognised under the IndiaAI Mission.
“My interaction with stakeholders in education, healthcare, and industry shows that AI adoption is happening in a big way across multiple sectors,” Vaishnaw stated, adding that this momentum is vital to ensuring India harnesses the full productivity potential of the ongoing AI revolution.
