Chennai: To equip students with the right skills for emerging sectors such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Electric Vehicles (EVs), the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched multiple new programs.
The new programs at IIT Madras, launched for the Academic Year 2025-26, are for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These include new B.Tech., B.S. and M.Tech. courses that blend cutting-edge research with industry-ready training.
Among the new offerings is an M.Tech. in EV, designed to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the country’s rapidly transforming mobility sector.
This program has an interdisciplinary curriculum with significant industry connections, with hands-on labs, internships, and research components in EV subsystems such as two-wheelers, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles.
At the undergraduate level, IIT Madras has introduced two new B.Tech programs. This includes Computational Engineering and Mechanics (CEM) and Instrumentation and Biomedical Engineering (iBME).
The CEM course aims to train students in digital engineering by integrating classical mechanical concepts with modern computational and AI tools, positioning them for next-generation careers in digital design and automation.
The iBME program targets innovations in healthcare technology and medical devices, preparing graduates for roles in diagnostics, therapeutics and AI-enabled healthcare systems.
IIT Madras has also launched a new B.S. in Chemistry degree, which provides a flexible, research-oriented curriculum with the option of advancing to an integrated M.S. The course promotes multidisciplinary collaboration, hands-on lab experience and the option to pursue minor degrees such as Data Science in addition to core Chemistry.
Welcoming applicants from across the country, Prof Prathap Haridoss, Dean (Academic Courses), said the new offerings “have been introduced keeping in mind the needs of both industry as well as academia and the aspirations of students”.
Additionally, to diversify its student intake, IIT Madras also highlighted its Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) and the newly introduced Fine Arts and Culture Excellence (FACE) admission categories.
Starting from the academic year 2025–26, FACE will provide two seats per B.Tech/B.S. program, one gender-neutral and one female-only, to students with a background in fine arts and culture.
A similar allocation from SEA has been in effect since 2024-25 to encourage students who succeed in sports. Notably, admissions to both categories will take place through distinct portals rather than the JoSAA platform.
