Mumbai: Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd (KRCL) has initiated a proof-of-concept (PoC) with Blue Cloud Softech Solutions Ltd to evaluate 5G-based connectivity and digital services across three major stations-Madgaon, Ratnagiri and Udupi. The initiative marks KRCL’s latest effort to assess next-generation communication technologies that can support both operational needs and commuter-facing services on the coastal route.
As part of the MoU, Blue Cloud will deploy its 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) solutions with high-capacity backhaul to test network performance in regions known for complex terrain and fluctuating connectivity. The pilot also includes digital and infotainment services for in-station and in-train environments, offering KRCL an opportunity to study the feasibility of delivering real-time information and stable internet access to passengers.
KRCL will use the outcome of the PoC to determine scalability for wider deployment across its network, particularly in sectors where traditional fibre-based connectivity is difficult and cost-intensive. Both organisations have agreed to explore a revenue-sharing model should the services be commercialised after the evaluation phase.
The initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ broader focus on technology-led station upgrades and experimentation with new connectivity frameworks aimed at improving service delivery. For the Konkan corridor characterised by high rainfall, sharp gradients and limited fibre routes, the pilot provides critical data on whether 5G FWA can function as a reliable alternative communication layer.
Separately, Blue Cloud announced its empanelment as a 5G FWA partner for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd in the Karnataka Telecom Circle, which will allow the company to extend similar pilots in additional regions.
