Chennai: Nokia has increased its investment commitment for its fixed network research and development facility in Chennai to Rs 270 crore, up from the initially announced Rs 220 crore, signalling growing confidence in India and Tamil Nadu as key global technology hubs. The company is also expected to invest around Rs 300 crore in the next phase of the project.
The development follows a memorandum of understanding signed between the Tamil Nadu government and Nokia in August 2024, which has now translated into the establishment of what is being described as the world’s largest R&D facility dedicated to fixed network technologies. Located at SIPCOT, Siruseri, the centre is designed to support the growing global demand for high-speed broadband connectivity.
The facility will focus on the development of next-generation optical network technologies, fixed wireless access solutions and new fixed broadband technologies. It will function as a global testbed for innovation, enabling the development and validation of advanced networking solutions for international markets.
According to the company, the centre has already generated more than a thousand high-end jobs and is expected to strengthen capabilities in advanced networking, deep-tech research and engineering skills.
Tamil Nadu Industries Minister T R B Rajaa said the expanded investment reflects commitments made during Chief Minister M K Stalin’s visit to the United States, underlining the state’s efforts to attract high-value technology investments.
