Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government has launched power infrastructure projects worth Rs 6,000 crore to address the state’s rising electricity demand, which is expected to touch 280 million units per day in the near future.Â
The announcement was made by Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar during the Assembly session.
200+ New Substations Planned
Responding to questions raised, the minister said the government has identified the need for more than 200 new 33/11 kV substations in areas witnessing heavy power demand. Construction work has been initiated accordingly.
Strengthening High-Capacity Infrastructure
To meet future requirements, the government is also constructing 400 kV, 220 kV, and 132 kV substations across the state. The minister highlighted that a large number of agricultural power connections have been provided to farmers, further adding to overall consumption. Growing commercial, industrial, and domestic needs have also contributed to the surge in demand.
The government’s primary objective, he said, is to ensure there is no electricity shortage anywhere in the state in the coming years. Keeping future load growth in mind, work on new substations and power lines is being taken up in all necessary regions.
Vizianagaram Projects Update
Providing details on district-level works, the minister informed the House that the Venugopalapuram substation in Vizianagaram district is currently under the re-tendering process and is expected to be completed by March 2027. He added that 220 kV and 132 kV line works worth Rs. 46 crore in the district have already been completed and are ready for commissioning. Additionally, works related to the Venugopalapuram substation are progressing with an investment of Rs. 77 crore.
