New Delhi: India conveyed its condolences over the death of Iran’s former supreme leader Ali Khamenei on 5 February, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, IFS, signing the condolence book at the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi.
Khamenei, 86, who had led the Islamic Republic since 1989, was killed in a reported joint US-Israeli airstrike on 28 February, an incident that has sharply escalated tensions in West Asia.
Indian Foreign Secretary Misri visited the embassy and met Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, conveying sympathies on behalf of the Government of India.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also spoke with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, following the development.
