New Delhi: Meta, the parent company of social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, unveiled its latest initiative: the “Know What’s Real” campaign. Designed to raise awareness about the dangers of misinformation, the campaign aims to empower users with the tools to identify and address false information circulating on the platforms.
The “Know What’s Real” campaign, spanning eight weeks, will spotlight key product features and safety measures on WhatsApp, such as block and report functions and forward labels. It urges users to exercise caution and verify suspicious information using fact-checking resources available on WhatsApp Channels.
Shivnath Thukral, Director of Public Policy India at Meta, said, “We have invested in industry leading programs like setting up a robust network of independent fact-checkers that work to debunk false claims and help citizens access reliable information, including collaborating with MCA to launch a WhatsApp tipline to curb AI-generated misinformation.”
In a bid to combat deepfakes and other misleading content, Meta will work closely with fact-checkers to label false information and limit its spread. Users are encouraged to report instances of misinformation to Meta’s Grievance Officer or independent fact-checking partners for verification.
Meta’s fact-checking program in India operates in collaboration with 11 independent organisations proficient in verifying content across 15 Indian languages and English.
