New Delhi: The Central government has established a panel to assess the effectiveness and implementation of its health insurance initiative, Ayushman Bharat, with the aim of encouraging improvements.
The panel, which includes officials from Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and representatives from hospitals, will mull over various issues, including expanding the scheme’s beneficiary base and devising strategies to combat fraud and misuse.
Under the guidance of the NHA, the panel will focus on ten key areas, notably defining the roles of central and state governments in policy formulation and implementation. It will also evaluate the scheme’s progress in terms of beneficiary identification, hospitalisation rates, equitable access to healthcare, awareness, reduction of out-of-pocket expenses, and private sector involvement.
Ayushman Bharat has two components: Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) and health and wellness centres. The PM-JAY is promoted as the world’s largest health insurance scheme, providing a coverage of Rs 500,000 per family annually, for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation, to over 120 million economically disadvantaged families.
