New Delhi: Retired IAS Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and IAS Gyanesh Kumar have been appointed as the new Election Commissioners on March 14. This initiative was taken due to vacant positions left after Anup Chandra Pandey’s retirement in February and the resignation of Arun Goel, as well as the urgency of the upcoming 2024 India general election.
Retired IAS officer Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, from the 1998 batch, has previously served as the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand. He was appointed during Pushkar Singh Dhami’s tenure as Chief Minister of Uttarakhand in 2021.
Sandhu has served as the Chairman of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Additional Secretary in the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development. He has an MBBS from Government Medical College, Amritsar, a Master’s Degree in History from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and a law degree.
1988-batch retired IAS officer Gyanesh Kumar, from the Kerala cadre has previously served as the Secretary in the Ministry of Cooperation under the leadership of Amit Shah. Before that he held the position of Secretary at the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. Kumar superannuated on January 31, 2024.
