New Delhi: Philanthropist Sudha Murty has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in a social media post on March 8.
In a tweet, PM Modi expressed his delight at Murty’s nomination, and said, “I am delighted that the President of India has nominated Sudha Murty Ji to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy and education have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti’, exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure.”
Announced on International Women’s Day, the nomination of Sudha Murty is part of the Indian President’s authority to nominate 12 members to the Upper House of Parliament for their contributions to arts, literature, sciences, and social services.
Sudha Murty is a renowned philanthropist, author, and former chairperson of Infosys Foundation. She is the wife of Narayana Murthy, the founder of IT giant Infosys, and her son-in-law is UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Murty’s was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, in 2006 for social work. She is also the recipient of the Padma Bhushan in 2023, the third highest civilian award in India.
Starting her career in computer science and engineering, Murty is also involved in public health care initiatives with the Gates Foundation. She has established orphanages, contributed to rural development, and championed initiatives for computer and library facilities in Karnataka government schools. Additionally, she founded the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University.
