Dehradun: President Droupadi Murmu has given her assent to the Uniform Civil Code Bill, making it a law in Uttarakhand. The state becomes the first to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) post-Independence, following its passage in the Uttarakhand assembly on February 7.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said, “It is a moment of great joy and pride for people of the state that the Uniform Civil Code Bill passed by our government in the Uttarakhand Assembly has been approved by the Honourable President Smt Droupadi Murmu.”
A government gazette notification noted that the President’s assent was granted under Article 201 of the Indian Constitution on March 11.
Dhami assured that the UCC’s implementation would ensure equal rights for all citizens and significantly reduce the oppression of women. He also noted the code’s role in fostering social harmony and equality.
