Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has announced the inauguration of a curriculum of four-year undergraduate programs (FYUP) in Kerala. He emphasized that the curriculum is in accordance with the global education system’s shift toward the transfer of skills and vocational training, in addition to the transmission of knowledge.
The chief minister stated at an inauguration event in Thiruvanthapuram that the new programs will foster the mental and social development of students by utilizing innovative pedagogy, prioritizing research and employability, and implementing quality learning methods. Students will have the freedom to select their minor and primary subjects without any limitations. Science students could enroll in courses in the humanities or arts. The curriculum and the students’ adaptation to it will be closely monitored by colleges, universities, and the higher education department until the first cohort of FYUP students graduates.
In addition, students are permitted to pursue inter-university transfers without altering their courses. Additionally, students have the opportunity to finish their degree in two and a half years by meeting the credit requirements during that time. The reforms in the higher education sector, including the introduction of the FYUP curriculum, come after reports of a significant migration of students from the state to other states in India and abroad for higher education.
