Hosur: The Tata Group is set to launch a new iPhone assembly plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu expected to start operating in the next few months. This expansion will establish Apple’s manufacturing presence in India, in addition to providing a further boost to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The move is part of Apple’s global production strategy aiming to reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing.
The iPhone unit built by Tata is expected to employ more than 50,000 workers, mostly women. In addition, this development signifies India’s growing importance in the global tech supply chain. The plant will manufacture iPhones from the components made in the unit that the Tata group set up a couple of years ago. According to the group, the initiative is in line with Tata’s commitment to create sustainable employment opportunities and aid in India’s economic growth.
The Tata Group acquired Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Wistron’s India operation last year. Consequently, the iPhone contract manufacturers in India now include Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata. Apple has already begun training workers at its factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu for the launch of its latest iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. By shifting its manufacturing hub to India, Apple aims to produce more than 50 million iPhones in India per year, thereby making India a significant hub in its global production network.Â
