New Delhi: Millions of mobile users in India can now benefit from uninterrupted connectivity as telecom operators Reliance Jio, Airtel, and BSNL have jointly introduced the Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) service. Launched on January 17, the initiative allows users to make calls and access mobile data by switching to any available network in areas with weak signals.
How Does ICR Work?
The Intra Circle Roaming service enables network sharing among telecom providers by leveraging infrastructure funded under the government’s Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN) program. When a user’s primary network is unavailable, their device connects to another network within the same mobile tower.
This service ensures seamless connectivity without additional costs to users, addressing persistent issues like dropped calls and poor data speeds in low-network zones.
Focus on Rural Connectivity
At the launch event, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted the role of ICR in improving mobile coverage across underserved regions. Nearly 27,000 DBN-funded 4G towers have been deployed to expand connectivity in over 35,000 villages. The move aims to bridge the digital divide, facilitating access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and online commerce in remote areas.
Benefits for Telecom Operators and Users
For telecom operators, ICR minimizes the need for exclusive infrastructure by promoting shared usage of existing towers. This reduces capital expenditure on new installations while ensuring optimal use of resources.
For users, the service promises uninterrupted coverage, particularly in rural and remote locations, improving the overall quality of mobile data and voice services.
A Step Towards Digital Inclusion
The collaborative effort by Jio, Airtel, and BSNL reflects the growing focus on achieving digital inclusivity in India. By addressing connectivity challenges and optimizing network infrastructure, the ICR service marks a significant step in ensuring reliable communication for users nationwide.
