New Delhi: Electric aircraft startup The ePlane Company has signed a non-binding agreement to supply 788 air ambulances to ICATT, an air ambulance service provider, in a deal valued at over $1 billion. The partnership aims to introduce electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for medical emergencies across India.
Deployment and Future Plans
ICATT plans to deploy these eVTOL air ambulances across all districts in India to improve emergency medical response times. The Chennai-based ePlane Company, which has raised $20 million from Speciale Invest and other investors, will begin commercial operations by the latter half of 2026. The company plans an initial production of 100 units per year, with the aircraft having a starting range of 110 kilometers, later extendable to over 200 kilometers.
eVTOL Technology and Challenges
eVTOL aircraft are designed for vertical takeoff and landing, reducing dependency on traditional runways. This technology could significantly enhance urban mobility and emergency medical transport. However, regulatory approvals, infrastructure development, and battery efficiency remain key challenges in their deployment.
Prototype Development
ePlane plans to develop three prototypes of the air ambulance model before scaling up production. Each unit will accommodate a pilot, a paramedic, and a patient, along with a stretcher. The company also envisions using AI-based technology to optimize electric flying taxis for passenger and cargo transport in the future.
India’s eVTOL Market
India’s eVTOL sector is gradually expanding, with companies like Archer Aviation and Sarla Aviation also exploring similar innovations. While the concept promises to transform urban and emergency transport, its success will depend on regulatory support, infrastructure readiness, and technological advancements.
The partnership between ePlane and ICATT signals growing interest in electric aviation for healthcare and mobility solutions, though its large-scale implementation will require addressing infrastructure and policy challenges.
