Hyderabad: Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD is in discussions with the Telangana government to set up its first manufacturing plant in India near Hyderabad.
According to sources, the state government has proposed three potential locations for the facility and BYD representatives are currently evaluating them.
Telangana Eyes Major EV Investment
The factory would be BYD’s first in India, marking a significant shift in its strategy after years of relying on imports. High import duties have kept BYD’s EV prices elevated, limiting its market penetration. A local production facility could reduce costs and strengthen its presence in India’s growing EV sector.
The Telangana government has assured support for the project, including land allocation. If finalized, the plant could attract further investment in the EV ecosystem, leading to the development of ancillary industries and job creation.
Policy Roadblocks and New Developments
BYD has explored setting up an Indian manufacturing unit for over two years. However, in 2023, the Indian government rejected its $1 billion joint venture proposal with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) due to regulatory concerns over Chinese investments.
With recent policy adjustments easing restrictions, BYD appears to be reviving its expansion plans. The company already has a technical collaboration with Olectra Greentech, a subsidiary of MEIL, which manufactures electric buses using BYD’s technology. This existing partnership may have influenced BYD’s decision to consider Telangana.
Expansion Plans Beyond EVs
Apart from assembling EVs, BYD is also planning a 20-gigawatt battery manufacturing facility in India. The company aims to scale up production capacity to 600,000 EVs annually within the next five to seven years.
Industry experts suggest that BYD’s move aligns with its global expansion strategy, especially as it faces increased competition in China and Europe. The company recently introduced advanced battery technology capable of rapid charging, signaling its intent to strengthen its position in the evolving EV market.
