Kolkata: Technical teams from India and Bangladesh are beginning a meeting today in Kolkata on the Ganga Water Treaty which is up for renewal in 2026.
This will be the 86th meeting of the Joint Committee as per the provisions incorporated in the Treaty and the technical meeting is being organized under the ambit of the Bangladesh Joint Rivers Commission Framework.
The Ganga water sharing is being conducted according to the 1996 treaty between India and Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh delegation assessed the downstream flow of Ganga at Farakka and the two sides exchanged water flow data over the last 5 months.
The Bangladesh delegation of the Joint Rivers Commission had earlier reached Kolkata and conducted a joint observation with their Indian counterparts at the relevant sites of the Ganga at Farakka.
The officials of the Joint Rivers Commission, which includes members from the governments of India, Bangladesh and West Bengal, meet once a year to deliberate on the pertinent issues about the cross-border rivers.
The Joint Rivers Commission of India and Bangladesh was constituted in 1972 as a bilateral mechanism to address issues on border and transboundary rivers.
