Kolkata: The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata is undertaking a two-phase expansion plan.
The first phase will involve demolishing the old domestic terminal building. The second phase will see a new terminal building covering 1.2 lakh sq m. by 2030 to help handle the increasing passenger numbers.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI), which maintains the Kolkata airport, has already sent a Rs 4500 crore project proposal to the Central Government for this expansion plan.
The modular expansion of the airport has already started to add two million to the annual passenger capacity. A budget of Rs 130 crore has been allocated for the project that will take annual passenger capacity to 28 million.
Meanwhile, a private agency will soon be given the contract to demolish the 30-year-old terminal building that became operational in 1995. It has been gradually sidelined since the new integrated terminal became functional in 2013.
The demolition work will start in August, and construction and other materials from the demolished building will be auctioned.
The agency that bags the demolition contract is expected to pay Rs 1.5 crore to the airport authorities as part of the auction cost. Metal Scrap Trade Corporation, a government-owned e-commerce company, is finalising the agency.
The new terminal building is estimated to have an annual capacity of 11 million passengers. The existing terminal will then be converted for domestic operations with an assessed annual passenger capacity of 34 million per year.
