Mumbai: Mumbai commuters will soon be able to access suburban trains, metro, monorail and public buses using a single smart card—’Mumbai 1′.
The initiative was jointly announced by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Alongside, the government also announced the induction of 238 air-conditioned (AC) trains to Mumbai’s suburban railway network, aimed at phasing out non-AC services in a two-phase process.
Unified Access to Urban Transport
The ‘Mumbai 1’ card is part of a broader urban mobility reform plan that aims to unify multiple transport services in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The card will initially be functional across Metro Rail Lines 1, 2A and 7 through a dedicated software application, with future plans to integrate suburban railway services, the monorail and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses.
According to officials, the state government and Indian Railways are currently working on expanding the card’s compatibility across all modes of public transport. The rollout is expected within a month.
Features and Functionality
Co-branded by the State Bank of India (SBI) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the Mumbai 1 card operates as a prepaid, contactless smart card.
Key features include:
Tap-and-go payment system across various transit points
Single ticket booking for end-to-end journeys involving multiple transport modes
Chip-based security for data protection
Stored value functionality with a pay-as-you-go option
Printed validity at the time of issuance
If the card is lost or damaged, a replacement can be issued for a fee of Rs 100.
Transport Infrastructure Upgrade
The government also announced the addition of 238 new AC trains to Mumbai’s suburban network. These trains will replace older non-AC coaches in a phased manner, though an official timeline for the transition has not been shared.
The launch of the Mumbai 1 card and AC trains is part of the state’s broader push to digitize and modernize public transportation in the financial capital. However, full operational integration across all transport systems remains a work in progress.
