Kohima: The Nagaland government has launched the State-Level Watershed Mahotsav 2025 and Mission Watershed PUNARUTTHAN at Naga Solidarity Park in Kohima.
The initiative focuses on reviving traditional water bodies, restoring degraded lands, and improving water-harvesting systems. The Ministry of Rural Development said the mission will ensure sustainable livelihoods through community participation and convergence with schemes such as MGNREGA.
Focus on restoring water resources
Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar said water security is an essential part of national security. He stated that the nation’s future depends on how well it protects its natural resources.
The minister noted that Nagaland plays a leading role in community-driven watershed management due to its strong ecological and cultural heritage. He said restoration of springs, renovation of water structures, and rejuvenation of land resources in the state are vital steps for safeguarding future generations.
Progress under PMKSY in Nagaland
The government also highlighted key achievements under the PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojana and watershed development in Nagaland. Fourteen watershed projects have been approved. A total of Rs 140 crore has been sanctioned, and Rs 80 crore has already been released. The state has renovated 555 water-harvesting structures, restored 120 springs, and supported more than 6,500 farmers.
Officials said the new programme marks a major step in transforming water-stressed regions into water-secure, climate-resilient landscapes. It also aligns with the central government’s focus on development in the Northeast.
