Noida, June 5 (APAC Media): The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has retained the interest rate on provident fund deposits at 8.25 per cent for the financial year 2025–26, continuing the same rate as the previous year, according to official sources and media reports.
The decision provides continuity in returns for over seven crore EPF subscribers across the country.
The recommendation to maintain the 8.25 per cent rate was approved by the Central Board of Trustees (CBT), the apex decision-making body of the EPFO, during its recent meeting chaired by the Union Minister for Labour and Employment.
The CBT’s approval is the first step in the process of finalising the annual interest rate on employees’ provident fund savings.
Following approval by the Central Board of Trustees (CBT), the proposal is sent to the Ministry of Finance for concurrence. The interest rate is made official only after approval from the Finance Ministry, after which the EPFO issues a formal notification.
This multi-stage approval mechanism is standard practice and often contributes to delays in the final crediting of interest to subscribers’ accounts.
Once notified, the interest is calculated retrospectively for the entire financial year on a monthly running balance basis and subsequently credited to individual provident fund accounts.
This ensures that subscribers receive interest for every eligible month, even if the actual posting to accounts occurs later in the year.
However, EPFO has not specified a fixed timeline for the crediting of interest for the current financial year. In previous years, the crediting process has often extended several months beyond the end of the financial year due to administrative procedures, reconciliation of accounts, and system updates.
Despite the delay, the organisation maintains that subscribers do not suffer any monetary loss, as interest accrues for the full applicable period.
The EPF scheme remains one of the largest social security and retirement savings mechanisms in India, offering tax-efficient long-term savings with government-backed returns.
The continuation of the 8.25 per cent interest rate is seen as a measure of stability amid evolving macroeconomic conditions, including fluctuating bond yields and changing monetary policy dynamics.
Subscribers are advised to monitor updates on their provident fund accounts through official platforms such as the EPFO member portal and the UMANG mobile application. Once the interest is credited, it becomes visible in individual passbooks and account statements.
The formal notification from the government is awaited before the EPFO begins the process of updating subscriber accounts with the declared interest for FY 2025–26.
