New Delhi, August 13 (APAC Media):Â Parliament has passed the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, paving the way for the state to be officially renamed Keralam.
The Rajya Sabha cleared the legislation through a voice vote on Wednesday, a day after the Lok Sabha passed it.
The move follows a unanimous resolution adopted by the Kerala Assembly in 2024, urging the Centre to change the state’s name from Kerala to Keralam. The state government forwarded the resolution to the Centre in June 2024.
The Bill was subsequently referred by the President of India to the Kerala Legislature for its views. The Assembly later adopted another unanimous resolution supporting the proposed name change.
The legislation provides for amendments to the Constitution of India, including changes to the First Schedule, where the state’s name will be altered from Kerala to Keralam in accordance with Article 3 of the Constitution.
