New Delhi: Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, supervised the signing of 8 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) between agencies affiliated with the Ministries of Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and IBM and gave the keynote address on this occasion, on September 27.
Dharmendra Pradhan, while addressing the audience, said that India currently has extraordinary potential due to its vast and youthful population, and stressed the fact that they need to be equipped with the skills that are necessary to excel in today’s modern workforce. This announcement marked a significant milestone in India’s objective of becoming a ‘Skilled India,’ with a particular focus on expanding digital skills training and fostering competence in emerging technologies through the IBM SkillsBuild platform.
Curated courses, under the MoUs, will be made accessible to equip the youth of India with future-ready skills. The collaboration will centre on the co-creation of curriculum for skilling learners across school education, higher education, and vocational skills on technologies like AI (including generative AI), cybersecurity, cloud computing and professional development skills that are currently on the rise.
IBM’s collaboration with the MoE and the MSDE covers three main levels of education:
1. School Education: IBM will provide digital content from IBM SkillsBuild for high school students, teachers, and trainers in schools identified by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS). These resources will be accessible online, through webinars, and in-person workshops conducted by IBM’s CSR partners. Additionally, IBM will update CBSE’s AI curriculum for Grades 11 and 12, and create new courses on cyber skills and blockchain for high school students, available on IBM SkillsBuild.
2. Higher Education: Along with its CSR partners, IBM will collaborate with the Department of Higher Education, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training & Research (NITTTR) in Chandigarh, and state skilling missions. They will provide students and faculty with access to IBM SkillsBuild, offering digital content and experiential learning to prepare them for technical careers.
3. Vocational Skills: IBM will continue its partnership with MSDE and work closely with the Directorate General of Training (DGT) and state vocational education and skilling departments. Their aim is to bring in job seekers, including long-term unemployed individuals and school dropouts, onto IBM SkillsBuild. This will enable them to acquire the technical and professional skills necessary to re-enter the workforce.
