New Delhi: The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) announced a partnership between India’s River Cities Alliance (RCA) and the USA’s Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI) at COP28 in Dubai. This collaboration brings together 267 river cities, with RCA representing more than 142 Indian cities under NMCG and MRCTI representing 124 American cities along the Mississippi River.
The Memorandum of Common Purpose (MoCP) signed between the two entities is set to be a pivotal role in global river conservation efforts. Both RCA and MRCTI share a common vision to redefine the relationship between cities and rivers. Recognising rivers as vital environmental, social, and economic assets, the partnership signifies a unified commitment to river preservation and sustainable urban development.
Key figures involved in the agreement include Asok Kumar, Special Secretary & DG-NMCG, representing RCA, and Mayor Mitch Reynolds, Mayor Errick Simmons, Mayor LaToya Cantrell, and Colin Wellemkamp, representing MRCTI.
Established by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Water Resources, RD & GR, in association with NIUA, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, RCA aims to bring about a positive change in more than 142 Indian river cities. On the other hand, MRCTI empowers mayors from 124 American cities along the Mississippi River to protect and restore this crucial system.
Following the signing, a productive bilateral meeting unfolded between RCA and MRCTI, focusing on collaborative initiatives, knowledge exchange, and concrete plans to strengthen the partnership. Notably, RCA expressed interest in MRCTI’s satellite-based water quality monitoring, while MRCTI’s citizen science initiative on plastic pollution intrigued the RCA delegation.
