Bengaluru: The Defence Bio-Engineering & Electromedical Laboratory of Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) hosted the first-ever international workshop on ‘Emerging Technologies & Challenges for Exoskeleton’. Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D (DDR&D) and Chairman of DRDO, Dr Samir V Kamat, gave the keynote address where he discussed the wide-ranging uses of exoskeleton technology in both military and civilian contexts.
Dr Kamat urged collaboration among R&D stakeholders, Armed Forces, industry, and academia to tackle challenges and plan for the future of exoskeletons. The event also saw the presence of the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC) Lt. Gen JP Mathew.
Lt. Gen JP Mathew talked about the evolution of exoskeleton research, focusing on its benefits in rehabilitation, therapy, and augmentation, as well as its significant commercial potential as a dual-use technology.
The workshop included presentations by Professor Robert Reiner from ETH, Zurich, and Professor Arun Jayaraman from Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. Dr UK Singh, Director General (Life Sciences), discussed upcoming challenges and the Armed Forces’ needs. He encouraged researchers to collaborate and address them.
More than 300 participants from DRDO, Services, Industry, Academia, and Researchers attended the two-day workshop. Exoskeleton technology utilises wearable structures to improve human capabilities.
