Kharagpur: Professor Rintu Banerjee has been named deputy director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, making history as the first woman to fill this role. Having had a remarkable career in biotechnology, Professor Banerjee founded and is currently chairing the P K Sinha Centre for Bioenergy and Renewables. Prior to this, she was the Head of the Agricultural and Food Engineering Department at IIT Kharagpur and the Centre for Rural Development, Innovative and Sustainable Technology.
Professor Banerjee has overseen several important positions over her career, including Coordinator for RuTAG, Nodal Coordinator for Australia and New Zealand for SPARC, and Chairperson of the Centre of Excellence in Precision Agriculture and Food Nutrition. She has participated in industry-academia collaborative research that has produced several national and international patents, and she holds a PhD in Microbial Biotechnology from the Chemical Engineering Department of IIT Kharagpur.
Professor Banerjee is renowned for bringing her 1G and 2G ethanol technology to the industry for commercialization. She has also managed several well-known government and industry-sponsored initiatives and has written two books on environmental biotechnology and OMICS-based methods in Plant Biotechnology.
