New Delhi: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, launched the “Cruise Bharat Mission” in Mumbai, aiming to expand India’s cruise tourism industry significantly. The mission targets doubling cruise passenger traffic within five years, with a focus on ocean, harbor, river, and island cruises.
The initiative, planned in three phases, will first focus on infrastructure development and forming international cruise alliances. Over 5,000 km of waterways will be activated, expecting to increase river cruise passengers to 1.5 million by 2029. The mission also includes the creation of 4 lakh jobs in the sector.
By 2029, sea cruise passengers are expected to grow to 1 million, with cruise calls rising to 500. The initiative seeks to develop new terminals and promote Indian cultural and natural heritage through tailored cruise circuits.
The mission highlights sustainable development and digital solutions for seamless operations, alongside infrastructure improvements like new marinas and terminals. The government also aims to integrate key stakeholders, including cruise operators, local communities, and regulatory agencies, to ensure inclusive growth.
