Siliguri: The Jalpaiguri Police have rolled out Tourist Bandhu, an initiative aimed at improving tourist safety and addressing challenges in North Bengal’s key tourist zones. The program was launched in October to tackle concerns ranging from human-wildlife conflicts to tourist exploitation, both of which pose risks to the region’s tourism economy.
The initiative includes nine task force teams operating across the district, with seven stationed at police assistance centers in Kranti, Meteli, and Mal blocks and two mobile units patrolling high-risk areas such as Gajoldoba and Chapramari. Each team is staffed by police officers and civic volunteers, with the mobile units comprising assistant sub-inspectors, constables, and drivers for real-time monitoring.
According to officials, the Tourist Bandhu teams are trained to address various emergencies, including human-animal encounters and incidents of misconduct. Apart from wildlife risks, Tourist Bandhu also addresses safety concerns related to criminal activities. In one instance, a Bangladeshi tourist was reportedly drugged and robbed. Police say the program is designed to help prevent such incidents by ensuring an active presence in tourist-heavy areas.
Jalpaiguri Superintendent of Police Khandbahale Umesh Ganpat stated that the seven assistance centers also provide tourists with essential information, including maps, directions, and vehicle fare details, to ensure smoother travel. However, police sources noted that many tourists remain unaware of the initiative and the services it offers.
The Tourist Bandhu initiative underscores the growing need for structured safety measures in North Bengal, where tourism depends heavily on visitor experience and security.
