Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s school education department will introduce artificial intelligence (AI), coding and digital tools as part of the curriculum for students in classes six to nine from the 2025-26 academic year.
The State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) is finalizing the syllabus and will soon begin training teachers.
New Subjects and Tools in Curriculum
The updated syllabus will cover AI, coding, robotics and machine learning. Students will also use interactive online tools like GeoGebra for math and PhET simulations for physics. The government plans to equip middle school hi-tech labs with these resources.
Students will start with visual-based programming languages like Scratch and Blockly, which are designed to introduce basic coding concepts through animations and interactive activities.
As they progress, they will learn Python and other programming languages to write simple programs and understand AI applications.
Teacher Training Before Implementation
The school education department recently consulted industry experts to shape the syllabus. Once finalized, interested math and science teachers will undergo training to teach the new subjects effectively. The department will collect teacher feedback to refine the curriculum further.
Previously, Tamil Nadu partnered with Microsoft for the Technology Education and Learning Support (TEALS) program, which introduced advanced technologies to over 100 schools, covering around 38,000 students in classes six to nine.
With this new initiative, the state aims to align school education with emerging technology trends, preparing students with essential digital skills.
