New Delhi: India’s Paras Defence and Space Technologies has signed an MoU with Israel-based MicroCon Vision to locally produce high-performance drone cameras used in surveillance and defence operations.
Paras Defence and MicroCon’s decision is strategically designed to lessen dependence on imports.
Focus on Cost Reduction, Local Production
High-end drone cameras currently cost between Rs 20 lakh to Rs 40 lakh per unit, with most units being imported. The agreement is expected to lower these costs by 50 to 60 per cent through domestic manufacturing.
Under the MoU, MicroCon will supply Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) payloads and Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) seekers exclusively to Paras Defence for operations within India.
The move aligns with India’s broader objective to localize defence production and reduce import dependency, especially in critical technology areas like ISR systems. The locally manufactured payloads are expected to support defence and civilian applications such as disaster management and infrastructure monitoring.
Addressing Technology Gaps in the Drone Ecosystem
India’s drone industry is expanding at a reported annual growth rate of 17 per cent, driven by rising demand in defence, homeland security, and industrial surveillance. However, technological dependence on foreign manufacturers for high-performance ISR payloads has been a persistent gap.
The partnership seeks to fill that gap by integrating AI-driven analytics, thermal imaging and high-resolution video capabilities into drone systems that are both cost-effective and locally accessible. This includes applying these capabilities to scenarios such as border surveillance, search and rescue missions and industrial monitoring.
Strategic Implications for Defence Sector
According to Paras Defence, the initiative aims to make advanced ISR technology more accessible to Indian defence forces, aligning with the government’s push for indigenous development under the Make in India initiative.
MicroCon Vision will retain technological leadership, while Paras Defence will handle domestic production and operational deployment.
