New Delhi: Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) is set to upgrade its IP backhaul network using Nokia’s IP/MPLS solutions to enhance connectivity and manage growing data traffic.
The three-year collaboration will focus on improving the capacity and reliability of VIL’s transport network across multiple telecom circles in India.
Network Expansion to Support Growing Data Traffic
As digital services, AI-driven applications, and immersive gaming continue to drive higher data consumption, Vodafone Idea is strengthening its infrastructure to meet these demands.
Nokia will deploy its 7750 SR and 7250 IXR series routers to modernize VIL’s core, aggregation, and access layers. This upgrade aims to create a scalable and efficient network that can support both 4G and future 5G services.
Vodafone Idea’s network modernization plan includes replacing older network components with Nokia’s IP/MPLS technology.
The transition is expected to reduce operational costs and enable faster deployment of new services. The new infrastructure will also integrate automation-based planning and migration services to enhance efficiency.
Strategic Shift Amid Industry Challenges
This network upgrade comes at a time when Vodafone Idea is working to improve service quality while managing financial constraints. By investing in IP backhaul expansion, the company aims to enhance network resilience and reduce operational expenses through energy-efficient solutions.
Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer at Vodafone Idea, emphasized the importance of the upgrade in addressing increasing data demands. Prashant Malkani, Head of Network Infrastructure at Nokia India, highlighted the role of IP/MPLS technology in delivering better network performance.
The collaboration between Vodafone Idea and Nokia reflects the broader trend of Indian telecom operators strengthening their networks to accommodate growing data consumption and prepare for 5G expansion.
