Guwahati: The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, approving the creation of a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, Assam. This will make it the 22nd IIM in the country and the second in the North-East after Shillong.
The Bill was cleared through a voice vote a day after its introduction, amid protests from the Opposition over electoral roll revisions in Bihar. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, while introducing the Bill, said that the institute addresses a long-standing demand from students in the region. He noted that the Assam government has assured land and other support for the project.
The Bill cites Assam’s higher education base of over 5.5 lakh students and its population of more than three crore as key factors driving the proposal. It underlines the role of an IIM in building managerial capacity in the North-East and contributing to regional development.
A financial provision of Rs 555 crore has been made for the institute for five years, from 2025–26 to 2029–30, covering both recurring and non-recurring expenses. After this period, the institute is expected to operate on a self-sustaining model, with funding drawn from the Consolidated Fund of India.
With Guwahati already home to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and National Law University (NLU), the addition of an IIM is expected to further strengthen its position as an emerging education hub in the eastern region.
