New Delhi, June 9 (APAC Media): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has cleared the development of a 250 MW solar power project in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur district.Â
The project will be set up on nearly 850 acres of unused defence land and is aimed at advancing renewable energy adoption while ensuring productive utilisation of vacant defence assets.
The Ministry of Defence described the initiative as a significant step towards promoting clean energy and supporting sustainable infrastructure development.Â
The project will be executed by NTPC Ltd through a competitive bidding process designed to secure the most cost-effective energy solutions and maximise savings for defence establishments.
According to the ministry, the initiative brings together the objectives of national security, energy security, technological advancement, and environmental sustainability. It reflects the ministry’s efforts to utilise its resources effectively in support of broader national development priorities while safeguarding strategic interests.
The project is being described as the first initiative of its kind by the Ministry of Defence, involving the establishment of a large-scale solar power facility on defence land integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
Officials said the move aligns with the government’s focus on expanding renewable energy capacity, promoting sustainability, and reducing reliance on traditional energy sources.
In addition to enhancing long-term energy security for the armed forces, the project is expected to lower expenditure on conventional grid electricity procurement for defence installations.Â
The ministry noted that the initiative is likely to generate substantial cost savings for the government over the project’s operational lifespan.
