New Delhi: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has disconnected around 1.75 lakh Direct Inward Dialing (DID) and landline numbers found to be involved in unauthorized promotional and fraudulent activities. This initiative is part of the DoT’s major goal to curb spam calls and cyber fraud.
Recent observations indicate that a substantial number of spam calls originate from telecom identifiers such as 0731, 079 and 080, with entities misusing Primary Rate Interfaces (PRIs), leased lines, Internet Lease Lines, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunks and International Private Leased Circuits (IPLC).
Citizens have been actively reporting such cases under the “Jan Bhagidari” initiative using the Chakshu module on the Sanchar Saathi platform.
DoT utilizes this crowd-sourced data to identify fraudulent telecom resources, forwarding cases to Licensed Service Areas (LSAs) for further investigation. Upon verification of violations, the telecom services associated with such misuse are promptly disconnected.
Advisory for Enterprises and Consumers
Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) have been directed to ensure strict compliance with Unified License conditions, particularly concerning the misuse of PRIs, SIP trunks, leased lines, and other telecom infrastructure.
TSPs must regularly monitor and verify the legitimate use of these services to prevent unauthorized commercial communication.
The DoT has urged enterprises, bulk users, and consumers to ensure that their telecom resources are used following regulatory guidelines, warning that violations could lead to severe penalties, including service disconnection.
Additionally, citizens are encouraged to continue reporting spam and fraud calls via the Chakshu module on the Sanchar Saathi website. Users can also download the Sanchar Saathi app to report instances of telecom misuse linked to cybercrime and fraud.
