Mumbai: Senior IAS Iqbal Singh Chahal (Retd., 1989 batch) has been appointed Chairman of the Mumbai Police Housing Township Project with the rank of Minister of State. He will assume charge on February 1, 2026, for a tenure of five years.
This appointment marks a key post-retirement role for Chahal. He becomes the second senior bureaucrat in the present Maharashtra government to receive a Minister of State rank position after retirement.
The Mumbai Police Housing Township Project is a flagship initiative of the Maharashtra government. It focuses on providing quality housing to Mumbai Police personnel and their families. The project aims to improve the welfare, living conditions, and overall morale of police staff while strengthening the city’s law enforcement support system.
Chahal brings extensive administrative experience across state and central governments. He has served as Collector of Thane and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. At the Centre, he held positions as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Women and Child Development, and the Ministry of Panchayati Raj.
At the state level, he has served as Principal Secretary in the Water Resources and Urban Development departments of Maharashtra. Most recently, he was Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation from 2020 to 2024, where he led Mumbai’s COVID-19 response through the widely noted ‘Mumbai Model’ of decentralized ward-level management and oxygen supply planning.
