Patna: Lieutenant General (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed as the new Governor of Bihar.Â
A former officer of the Indian Army, Hasnain is known for his leadership in counter-insurgency operations and his strategic role during a distinguished military career spanning nearly four decades.
Early Life and Education
Hasnain went to Sherwood College in Nainital before pursuing higher education at the University of Delhi. He also attended the Royal College of Defence Studies in London and the Asia-Pacific Centre for Security Studies in Honolulu to gain expertise in defence and strategic affairs.
Distinguished Military Career
Hasnain was commissioned into the 4th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in 1974 after graduating from the Indian Military Academy.
During his long service, he held several important command positions, especially in Jammu and Kashmir. One of his most notable assignments was commanding the XV Corps (Chinar Corps) in Srinagar, which oversees military operations in the Kashmir Valley.
He later commanded the XXI Corps and also served as Military Secretary at Army Headquarters before retiring in 2013. Over the course of his service, Hasnain received several prestigious honours, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and the Sena Medal.
Post-Retirement Role
After retiring, Hasnain remained active in academic and strategic initiatives. In 2018, he was appointed Chancellor of the Central University of Kashmir, where he focused on strengthening higher education in the region. He has also been a prominent commentator on national security and geopolitical issues.
