CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: The state’s urban development department has issued a draft notification for elevating the Jalna Municipal Council of the neighbouring district to a municipal corporation.
The notification has asked people to file their objections, if any, till June 8, for issuing the final notification.
Once done, it will become the 29th municipal corporation in the state and fifth in Marathwada.
The town, known for one of the highest steel productions in the country, was awaiting the upgradation for couple of decades.
The draft notification announcing the upgradation was uploaded by the state urban development department on Wednesday and objections have been sought. The draft notification has been signed UDD deputy secretary Vidya Hampayya.
Former minister from Shiv Sena Arjun Khotkar said the decision to upgrade the civic body will pave way for the development of the town. “We have been taking a strong follow-up with the state government, following which chief minster Eknath Shinde and deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis took a considerate view of our long-pending demand.”
