Can you share your leadership philosophy and how it has guided you in managing public transport and urban development projects?
Public transport and urban development projects play a crucial role. Our philosophy has been centred on integrated mobility planning. This approach requires a comprehensive understanding of how various elements within city urban transportation systems are interconnected. These elements encompass the relationship between transportation and environment, urban planning, and climate change. By acknowledging these connections, we can devise sustainable strategies which can tackle issues of citizen accessibility, efficiency, safety and environmental impact. Additionally, adopting a holistic view regarding urban transportation is essential. This involves looking beyond isolated projects and consider the wider context. Leaders must comprehend how various modes of transportation, like public transit, cycling, and walking, interplay with land use, infrastructure, and societal elements. With this all-encompassing perspective, we can create improved systems that serve the community.
What have been the key successes and challenges in implementing smart city initiatives in Pune?
The implementation of smart city initiatives in Pune has been a dynamic and evolving journey. While we have achieved significant milestones that have enhanced the liveability and sustainability of our city, we continue to address challenges with innovative solutions and a collaborative approach. Our commitment to transforming Pune into a model smart city remains steadfast, and we are dedicated to leveraging technology and innovation to create a better future for our citizens.
As the CEO of Pune Smart City, I’m proud to share our journey, highlighting both our key successes and the challenges we’ve encountered along the way. Implementing smart city initiatives in Pune has been a transformative process, focusing on enhancing the quality of life for our residents through innovative solutions. Integrated Command and Control centre (ICCC), Smart Traffic Management System (ATMS), Digital Citizen Services (PMC Care), Smart Water Management (Water 24/7), Green and Sustainable Initiatives are some our success stories.
We overcame challenges of infrastructure and legacy systems, financial stability, data privacy & security, citizen engagement, stakeholder coordination through phased implementation approach, PPPs, ensuring robust cyber security measures, public awareness campaigns, regular meetings with stakeholders.

Could you discuss any innovative projects that you have spearheaded which have significantly improved public services?
On Digital front, Pune Smart city has brought in the digital revolution(Integrated Command & Control Centre along with Smart Elements, ATMS, HMIS, Digital Education System, CCTV Surveillance, PMC Care)where technology has been one of the key drivers in the smart city projects we implemented. It has significant impact on the operations, and it can change the way we solve the problems and cater to the needs to the citizens.
In Pune smart city plan, we have given significance to technology solutions as well as to the sustainable living that can enable administration to function in a smooth manner and improve the service delivery of the government and city liveability under sustainable goals.
These innovative projects demonstrate our commitment to leveraging technology and strategic planning to enhance public services in Pune. By focusing on smart solutions across various sectors, we have made significant strides in improving urban mobility, energy efficiency, water management, waste management, public administration, and healthcare. These initiatives not only address immediate challenges but also lay the foundation for a more sustainable and liveable city for our residents.
How do you see the role of technology evolving in the management of city infrastructure?
The role of technology in the management of city infrastructure is poised to grow exponentially, driving efficiencies, sustainability, and resilience. By embracing these technological advancements, Pune aspires to create a model neighbourhood of liveability and sustainability matching global standards by fully deploying all 24 smart city features in a “future ready” manner. Future ready is critical because as the area develops, it will undergo a 4x population growth by 2030.Pune has prepared roadmap with early realization about smart technologies and it’s potential with the data for the city which is being implemented to make more use to improve the urban quality of life. The roadmap enabled Pune city and along with the platforms to evolve as the city gains maturity in the potential use.
As the CEO of Pune Smart City, I foresee several key trends and transformative impacts of technology on city infrastructure management:
- Enhanced Connectivity and Integration
- IoT and Smart Infrastructure:
Role: The Internet of Things (IoT) will play a pivotal role in connecting various elements of city infrastructure, from traffic lights and streetlights to waste bins and water systems. These interconnected systems will enable real-time monitoring, data collection, and automated responses.
Example: Smart sensors in water pipelines can detect leaks and alert maintenance teams immediately, reducing water wastage and ensuring efficient resource management.
- Data-Driven Decision Making
- Big Data Analytics:
Role: The integration of big data analytics will enable city administrators to make informed decisions based on real-time data and predictive insights. By analyzing patterns and trends, cities can optimize operations, predict potential issues, and plan proactively.
Example: Traffic data analytics can help identify congestion patterns and suggest optimal traffic flow adjustments or infrastructure improvements.

Example: Smart bins equipped with fill-level sensors can alert waste collection teams when they need to be emptied, optimizing collection schedules and reducing operational costs.
What do you see as the biggest challenges facing PMPML today?
The biggest challenges before PMPML (Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited) can be attributed to following two main factors:
- Availability of Buses for a Large Population:
- PMPML caters to a population of around 73 lakhs (7.3 million) (including PMC,PCMC& PMRDA region), which requires 3650 Buses to efficiently manage public transportation needs.
- However, the current fleetsize(1928)is muchless as compared to the MoHUA guideline and inadequate to meet the demands andtherefore leading to overcrowding and longer waiting times.
- This lack of availability of buses may discourage citizens from using public transport and lead to traffic congestion as more people resort to private vehicles.
- Operational Losses per Bus:
- PMPML is reportedly incurring operational losses of Rs. 8000 per-bus per day. This could be due to factors like:
- High operational costs including fuel, maintenance, and staff salaries.
- Low passenger fares that might not be sufficient to cover operational expenses.
What steps are you taking to make PMPML’s operations more sustainable and environmentally friendly by leveraging innovation & tech?
PMPML is making significant strides towards sustainable and environment friendly operations by incorporating several initiatives:
Electric and CNG Buses:
- Reduced Emissions: Electric vehicles (473 E-Buses) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) 1400 buses produce significantly lower emissions compared to traditional diesel buses. This helps to combat air pollution and contributes to a cleaner environment for Pune.
- Lower Operational Costs: While the upfront cost of EVs might be higher, they offer lower operational costs in the long run due to reduced fuel expenses. CNG buses can also be more economical to operate compared to diesel.
Technology Integration:
- ITMS (Intelligent Transport Management System): This system will allow PMPML to monitor traffic conditions, track bus locations in real-time, and optimize routes for better efficiency. This will help toreduce travel times and improve service reliability.
- Bus Tracking and Estimated Time of Arrivals (ETA): Passengers will be able to access real-time information about bus locations and estimated arrival times through mobile apps or displays at bus stops in near future. This transparency and convenience will encourage use of Public transport and reduction in vehicular pollution.
- Online Ticketing: Online ticketing system of PMPML eliminates the need for paper tickets, saving time and resources. PMPML has introduced QR code based UPI payment system for ticketing since October 2023. These initiatives offer more convenient ways for passengers to purchase fares.
- High-Tech Bus Stops and Terminals: These facilities might include features like digital displays showing ETAs, electronic ticketing kiosks, and improved passenger amenities. This will create a more comfortable and informative experience for commuters.
The combined effect of these initiatives will result in sustainable and user-friendly public transport system.
- Reduced Environmental Impact: Lower emissions from EVs and CNG buses contribute to cleaner air.
- Improved Efficiency: Technology like ITMS and bus tracking will help to optimize routes and reduce travel times.
- Enhanced Passenger Experience: Online ticketing, ETAs, and high-tech facilities will provide a more convenient and informative journey for commuters leading to modal shift from Private to Public Transport.
How do you plan to balance the growth of PMPML with the increasing demand for public transportation in Pune?
Through Network Expansion and Frequency Optimization, Increase the Bus fleet, Modal Integration, Technology Adoption, Capacity Enhancement and Sustainable Practices PMPL can be set on growth path.
How do you foresee PMPML evolving over the next five years under your leadership?
Our vision for PMPML includes a series of strategic initiatives, transformative changes, and incorporation of Information technology.
