New Delhi: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) have introduced an electric tiller designed to aid small and marginal farmers in India and improve sustainable and efficient farming practices, the Ministry of Science & Technology informed.
The new Electric Tiller was launched by the Director General of CSIR and Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) in Durgapur, N. Kalaiselvi. The ministry said, “It features improved torque and field efficiency. “It significantly reduces hand-arm vibration, operates quietly, and produces zero exhaust emissions compared to traditional ICE tillers.”
The electric tiller, the ministry claims, reduces operational costs by 85%, helping small and marginal farmers that makeup over 80% of the Indian farming community with less than 2 hectares of land holdings. It also supports India’s goals of attainting net-zero emissions through its additional features like battery pack swapping and multiple charging options, including AC and Solar DC charging.
The tiller is compatible with several standard agricultural attachments like ridgers, ploughs, iron wheels, and cultivators, and it comes with a 2-inch water pump and a trolley attachment capable of carrying up to 500 kg. It can be navigated easily due to its electronic controls and ergonomic handling, thereby reducing operator fatigue and maximising productivity.
