Bengaluru: The Union government has announced the launch of a new EV testing facility in Bengaluru to expand EV battery and charger testing in South India. Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi will inaugurate the EV testing facility at the National Test House (NTH) RRSL Camp. NTH is a testing lab under the Department of Consumer Affairs and has provided various testing and quality assurance facilities in different sectors.
The upcoming facility will provide a boost to the growing ecosystem of electric vehicles by offering critical testing infrastructure to the EV industry. It will also aid in fulfilling the nation’s commitment to sustainable and green energy solutions. The laboratory at NTH will be equipped with advanced EV battery testing equipment that can perform various tests including electrical safety, functional safety, durability tests, performance metrics, etc. This will help ensure that the electric vehicles meet rigorous quality requirements before reaching the market.
The EV infrastructure market in the country is witnessing rapid growth. According to a report by global advisory firm Forvis Mazars, the number of public battery electric vehicle (BEV) charging stations in India has significantly increased from 1800 in February 2022 to 16,347 in March this year. EV sales in India have tripled in the last fiscal year, especially for two-wheeler and three-wheeler vehicles. By 2030 the country is projected to see 50 million EVs on the road.
