New Delhi: State-run Engineers India Ltd (EIL) announced that it has set a new global benchmark by completing a 4,058 metre Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) pullback across the Brahmaputra river for a 26-inch diameter pipeline, the longest such crossing ever achieved worldwide.
The milestone surpasses EIL’s earlier record of 4,027 metres set during the Ganga river crossing under the same project, underlining the company’s engineering and execution capabilities in difficult geological conditions. The drilling forms a crucial part of the Paradip–Numaligarh Crude Oil Pipeline (PNCPL) project.
The pipeline is a key energy corridor being developed for Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL) to transport imported crude oil from Paradip Port in Odisha to Assam, passing through several eastern and northeastern states.
Once operational, the project is expected to enhance India’s energy security, support refinery expansion, and boost regional economic activity and employment.
